Tall buildings also tend to intercept upper level high velocity winds and deflect them down to ground level, giving rise to conditions that could be unpleasant or even dangerous to pedestrians. Such accelerated winds also reduce the appeal of plazas, outdoor cafes, parks and pedestrian access-ways. Vertically accelerated downward wind flows can be mitigated with the help of architectural elements like podia or, canopies. Horizontally accelerated flows are best ameliorated with soft and hard landscape elements such as trees, shrubs and porous fences. This paper reports results of wind tunnel investigations that have been carried with the objective of assessing the role of landscape elements in moderating the pedestrian level wind environment in the vicinity of tall buildings. The tests have been carried out in the de Bray boundary layer wind tunnel at the University of Auckland on a representative model of a tall building suburb in New Delhi using the erosion technique enhanced with an image processing system. The results of the tests have brought out the effectiveness of landscape elements such as trees and porous fences in mitigating adverse horizontal winds in the vicinity of tall buildings.

Torsion Analysis of High-Rise Buildings using Quadrilateral Panel Elements with Drilling D.O.F.s

Generally, the finite element method is a powerful procedure for analysis of tall buildings. Yet, it should be noted that there are some problems in the application of many finite elements to the analysis of tall building structures. The presence of artificial flexure and parasitic shear effects in many lower order plane stress and membrane elements, cause the numerical procedure to converge in...

Developing a Sense of Place by Humanizing Public Pedestrian Precincts

This research paper lays stress on philosophies of human desire. All the human being has some psychical need in addition to physical needs. And to satisfy the psychical needs, there is a need for stimulants, more in case of exclusive pedestrian precincts. Having exclusively Pedestrian precincts/Cores in city design draws its inspiration from the fact that public zones, accessible to majority of...

Abstract Old and historical contexts always consider as the major and historical and cultural heritage of cities. Nowadays the role of urban landscape in historical contexts and pedestrian paths is greatly considered by the researchers in urban landscaping, designing and planning. Urban landscape is cultural capitals of the cities and pedestrians are quite interested in it. The rate of effec...

Strain based panel elements for shear wall analysis

The finite element method (FEM) can be applied to practically analyze the tall buildings in which the shear walls are used to resist the lateral loads. Accordingly, a variety of displacement and strain-based as well as frame macro elements have been proposed for analysis of the tall buildings. With respect to application of the lower order plane stress elements, analytical problems may arise wi...
